The Wayne County Council for Arts, History & Humanities is seeking nominations for its annual recognition awards.

The awards ceremony will be held in late October and recognizes individuals, businesses and organizations that contribute to the cultural environment in Wayne County.

Nominees must live in the county, attend an educational institution in the county or be involved with a county-based cultural or humanities organization.

Award categories include international artist, artist/ performer, patron, arts educator, history, humanities and volunteer.

Nominees may be submitted in only one category.

Nominations must include the nominee's full name, address, phone number and designated nomination category.

A biography, letters of support, press releases and other information may be included.

Nominators also should include their name, phone number and e-mail address.

Submit nominations by next Friday to EmmaJean Woodyard, c/o Downriver Council for the Arts, 20904 North Line Road, Taylor, MI 48180.

Modern technology meets art in the work of artists Lee Vanderwalker and Ted Johnson, on display through Sept. 13 at River's Edge Gallery, 3024 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte.

Detroit-based Vanderwalker uses bright colors on hand-painted silk to reflect the atmosphere of her Caribbean home.

Johnson, who works mainly as a digital painter, creates "original inkjet paintings" depicting men, women and children.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

The 13th annual Climate Controlled Art Fair is in the spotlight through Sept. 12 at Biddle Gallery, 2840 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte.


Biddle Gallery of Wyandotte offers a variety of artwork to patrons.

Avoid the heat by shopping for handmade pottery, jewelry, handbags, furniture, paintings, glass, photography and home, garden and fashion accessories from a variety of local artists in a cool setting.

Artists include Davin Brainard, Carl Oxley III, Dave Moroski, Ryan Weiss, David Scherer, Sarah Burger, Julia Stephenson, Susan Crowley, Jerome Ferretti, Furnace Hot Glass, Jeri Hollister, Cheryl English, Kaiser Suidan, Rick McQuaid, John Albert Murphy, Taryn Boyd, Kyle Raetz, Lisa Harrison and James Freeman.

Participants should bring a mat and wear comfortable clothes. There is a $5 fee for the drop-in class.
