Family Business Gives Pepper A Boost

For Pepper drummer Yesod Williams, music is the family business — in more ways than one.

The Hawaiian-born musician’s father was in a hard rock band called The Law during the ’80s, and also formed a label, named after the group.

The younger Williams, 28, followed in his father’s footsteps, not only as a player but in reactivating the Law Records label to release his reggae-rock band’s albums as well as those by other groups.

“We were big fans of the old Epitaph (Records) stuff,” Williams explains. “We had that mindset that if something was on Epitaph or Fat Records, we’d buy it even if we’d never heard of the band. They had that integrity, and I was confident they were going to put out bands I like.

“That’s what we’re going for with (Law Records); we’re just releasing bands that we’re fans of, first and foremost, and music we believe in and deserves to be heard.”

Pepper — which released its fifth album, “Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations,” in July — also is headlining the Here Comes the Law Tour with label bands Passafire and the Supervillians, which the trio plans to be an annual outing to expose the company’s roster.

“It’s going to be like Epitaph’s Punk-O-Rama Tour they used to do, just a killer platform for us to showcase any of our bands on the label, across the country,” Williams explains. “Next year Supervillains will headline it and we’ll stand down and make room for other groups.

“We couldn’t be happier, and releasing our own albums, too, is such a cool thing. We’re totally controlling our own destiny, which is great, man.”

The Here Comes the Law Tour with Pepper, Passafire and the Supervillains perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 28) at St. Andrew’s Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Tickets are $15. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
