Interview:
Teen Rockers Pushing To Next Level
The teen rock band Push Play has done well for itself without a record deal, using iTunes to spread the word about its first album, 2007’s “Deserted,” and building a large enough audience to headline small venues.
But all that’s about to change, according to frontman CJ Baran.
Since signing on with Mylie Cyrus’ manager Jason Morey, the Long Island quartet has finished a Christmas album (due out Nov. 28), signed on to perform as part of a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade float in New York and is working on a new album, “Found,” that will be released in March via what Baran — whose mother co-manages the group — calls “a really, really huge deal.”
“We’re in negotiations for something really big,” says Baran, 18, who deferred an admission into Fordham University in order to concentrate on Push Play. “It involves TV and other avenues. It’s kind of unorthodox, the first of its kind, but we really can’t talk about it yet.
“I really hope it comes through, but you never know. Until then, we’re just going to get out there and do what we’ve always done.”
That would be playing live, with shows that include new material such as “Cover Girl,” which may be the first single from “Found.” Push Play’s Pontiac stop this weekend is also a Halloween Extravaganza, and Baran says the band members have been busy getting their costumes together.
“We’re all going to be different rock ’n’ roll stars,” says Baran, who will be Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. “I’m getting skin-tight leather jeans and no short. I was thinking about (fake) lips, but it would be too hard to sing with those.
“We were going to be Power Rangers, but we thought this would be a lot cooler.”
Push Play hosts a Halloween Extravaganza Friday (Oct. 31) at the Eagle Theater, 15 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
