Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti knows that most of the interest in his new band, Little Joy, revolves around him. He just hopes people understand what it’s all about.

“I think this is not a side project,” Moretti says of Little Joy, which also includes his girlfriend, Binki Shapiro, and Brazilian musician Rodrigo Amarante. The trio released its debut album this week.

“This would've been a side project had it been solely my songs and I was singing and I hired these guys. But it’s really a band that evolved into an honest kind of three-part beast, I guess you can say.

“And I would like to continue with it, even when I go back to the Strokes.”

When the Strokes do resume, which the Brazilian-born Moretti says will be in February, he’ll be bringing back some new skills. Besides drumming in Little Joy, he also plays guitar, piano and bass, and he sings backing vocals, and during the group's live shows he’s up front rather than behind the drum kit.

“I was scared (expletive),” Moretti, 28, says of the recording sessions. “It would’ve been impossible had it not been for Rodrigo and Binks encouraging me and stuff, ’cause I was really scared and I didn't know if I was any good or not.

“But the vibe we established between the three of us was if something sounds good, you might as well play it. It wound up being a lot of fun.”

Little Joy, Birdgang and the Dead Trees perform Sunday (Nov. 10) at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit www. majesticdetroit.com.
