With membership in several bands and other musical projects, Warren Haynes is used to change. So another switch in the bass chair of his Gov’t Mule — from five-year veteran Andy Hess to newcomer Jorgen Carlsson — isn’t about to throw him.

“Andy just wanted to move on and do something different,” Haynes, 48, says of Hess, who replaced founding Gov’t Mule bassist Allen Woody, who died in 2000. “It was kind of a surprise to us, but he was nice enough to continue touring with us until we worked in a new bass player.

“In the long run it’s a nice, cathartic change. Jorgen’s doing a wonderful job. He kinda plays somewhere between Andy and Allen Woody; he bring some of the aggressive rock ’n’ roll spirit back to the music, which is nice.”

Haynes — who also works with the Allman Brothers Band and Phil Lesh & Friends, among others — says Gov’t Mule is “about halfway” finished with its next album, the follow-up to 2006’s “High & Mighty.” The set will feature playing by both Hess and Carlsson, and the guitarist says that so far “it’s very much a rock ‘n’ roll kind of record.”

But, cautions, “once we get back in the studio who knows where it’s gonna go, especially now that Jorgen is in the band ... you’re gonna see some automatic change that comes from new blood. I just think every record we do is different from the one before it, which is what keeps it exciting.”

Gov’t Mule and Back Door Slam perform Tuesday (Nov. 11) at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, 318 W. Fourth St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $27.50 in advance, $30 day of show, $55 balcony. Call (248) 399-2980 or visit www.royaloakmusictheatre.com.
