Matt Nathanson says that his career is starting to get “totally out of my depth of understanding.”

The singer-songwriter from Lexington, Mass., has enjoyed a slow, steady rise for his sixth album, 2007’s “Some Mad Hope.” But its second single, “Come On Get Higher,” reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot Adult-Contemporary chart and is now climbing the Hot 100, making Nathanson, 35, one of VH1’s You Oughta Know artists along the way.

“From here on out,” he notes, “it’s a little tricky.”

Still, Nathanson says he doesn’t feel that having what looks like a bona fide hit will derail his trajectory in any way.

“Nothing feels out of alignment. Everything’s kind of growing in what feels like a natural pace,” he explains. “I feel like we’ve taken a couple good steps, like having the VH1 thing happen, having radio kind of embrace the single in the way they have.

“I base things chiefly off the shows, and the tour has been selling well and we’ve been playing to more people than we did the last time we came through and they’re having a really good time and we’re having a blast. So it feels cool, like we’re doing what we’re supposed to do, which is great. Everything else is just helping the situation.”

Matt Nathanson and Jessie Baylin perform at 8 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 22) at St. Andrew’s Hall 431 E. Gongress St., Detroit. Tickets are sold out. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
