Phil Perry has no special plan when it comes to performing on New Year’s Eve.

“Well, I do sing ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ but what I just try to do is give ‘em more of me on New Year’s,” says the jazz and R&B singer, who was born in East St. Louis and now resides in southern California. “I try to let ‘em leave feeling different than they did when they came. I put more of an effort into that.”

Perry also gave more of himself on his eighth solo album, “Ready For Love,” which came out earlier this year. After two cover albums, he prevailed upon his label (Shanachie) to let him include mostly original material on the set, and it paid off with a No. 4 debut on the Billboard jazz albums chart.

“They gave me creative freedom, and I tried to respond by giving them something unique that’ll last a long time,” says Perry, 56, who did include two covers on the album — James Taylor’s “Shower the People” and Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By.”

“I just wanted to do the music I was wanting to hear on the radio but don’t. It seems to be finding its own audience, and I’ve gotten a lot of positive response. For it to be well-received lets me know I’m doing the right thing, which is very, very gratifying.”

Phil Perry performs at 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 30) at Arturo’s Jazz Theatre & Restaurant, 25333 W. Twelve Mile Road in the Star Theatre Complex. Tickets are $35, $50 for booth seating. Perry also performs at 9 and 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve. Tickets are $100, $150 for booth seating. Call (248) 357-6009 or visit www.arturosjazz.com.
