Robert Gordon Still Rockin' In His 60s

Robert Gordon has enjoyed a few career anniversaries recently, including the 30th anniversary of his first hit, “Red Hot,” and of his cover version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire.”

But turning 60 in 2007 was particularly resonant for the Maryland-raised rockabilly singer and former frontman for the group Tuff Darts.

“Sixty is a big number, man. It’s a little bit shocking,” notes Gordon, who’s now 61. “But aside from me being a little grayer and about twice as big as I used to be, the voice is, I’m happy to say, better than ever. So, hopefully, that compensates for the difference in age.”

Age is hardly slowing Gordon down. He’s reunited with guitar sidekick Chris Spedding, and the two released an Elvis Presley tribute, “It’s Now or Never,” in 2007 with help from Presley backing vocalists the Jordanaires. And even though he’s AARP eligible, Gordon hopes to follow in the mold of his own heroes, who continued singing well past retirement age.

“It’s true, man; I used to go see Chuck Jackson and people like Jerry Butler when I was a kid,” Gordon recalls. “It didn’t matter how old they were, they were just great.

“I don’t think it matters today, anyway. I’m just glad I was able to get a record deal. That’s the major concern; to be my age and have a record company interested in signing a 60-year-old, I feel pretty good about that.”

Robert Gordon with Chris Spedding and George Friend & Black Beauty perform Friday (Jan. 9) at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call (248) 544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
