When Paper Route’s major label debut album hits in April, it will be on Universal Motown — and the Nashville group is excited to be associated with the latter part of that name.

“It’s pretty awesome,” says bassist/programmer Chad Howat, 27. “Obviously, Motown is a legendary label, one of the most legendary labels of all time, and it’s really ironic that they signed four white suburban boys.

“But it’s definitely an honor. It’s really cool to say we’re on the same label as all of those greats. It’s kind of surreal, honestly, but everything in this band has come to us as a complete surprise, so this is just another item on the long list of surprises.”

Rest assured that nobody with confuse Paper Route with the Funk Brothers. The group, which currently has an EP out called “Are We All Forgotten,” specializes in what could be called “laptop rock,” mixing conventional band instruments with plenty of special effects and loops — the result of being in more conventional groups in the past and wanting to “approach music from a completely different perspective,” according to Howat.

“We all have a healthy respect for song form and the craft of songwriting, and we understand that melody is paramount,” says singer-guitarist Andy Smith, 26. “But you can make a song more interesting, depending on the production.

“What we do comes from just loving songwriting but also loving interesting production and trying to blend the two.”

Paper Route performs with Innerpartysystem, Sonny and Otto Vector perform at 7 tonight at the Shelter, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Tickets are sold out. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
