Interview:
Innerpartysystem Enjoying Early Success
Success has surprised, but certainly pleased, the members of Innerpartysystem.
The eastern Pennsylvania quartet has been rocking the world with “Don’t Stop,” the first single from the group’s self-titled debut album, which came out in September. The song hit No. 35 on Billboard’s Top Modern Rock Tracks chart, and it’s given Innerpartysystem a berth both on radio and in clubs.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” says Jesse Cronan, who handles synthesizers and sequencing and also designs the group’s light show. “We were really excited about (‘Don’t Stop’) when we finished it, and we showed it to the label and they were like, ‘Yeah!’ which was great.
“Then to see something stick for us like ‘Don’t Stop’ has, that was great. We’re really thankful people are grabbing onto the song, ‘cause we like playing it — and now we get to at every show.”
With a second single, most likely “Die Tonight, Live Forever,” due out soon, Innerpartysystem is “in the middle of touring” to promote the album, according to Cronan. But away from the stage he and his laptop-toting bandmates are also starting to think about their follow-up project.
“We’re trying to write some material for the next record,” says Cronan, 25. “We all kind of write a lot. We have a lot of beats that we need to put together, and a lot of scraps of songs. Once we’re off the road we’ll take it all and compile it together and see what works. But that may be awhile, ‘cause this (album) feels like it’s just getting started.”
Innerpartysystem, Paper Route, Sonny and Otto Vector perform at 7 p.m. Friday (Jan. 16) at the Shelter, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Tickets are sold out. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
