Steve Miller, the drummer in the Dover Plains, N.Y., punk band Just Surrender, does get teased about sharing a name with a certain classic rock star. But, he says, “not as much as you think.”

“When I was younger, it happened all the time,” says Miller, 23. “In high school, every single one of my teachers would be like, ‘Oh, Steve Miller. Sing ‘The Joker for us...’

“I was a fan of classic rock, actually, so I was familiar with who it was. My dad and I would go fishing in the truck and he’d have the classic rock station on. It still comes up, but it’s funny. It hasn’t ever really bothered me.”

Miller is making his own rock ‘n’ roll mark with Just Surrender, which he co-founded with two high school friends before adding a fourth member. The group is between albums at the moment, though it’s just released an EP, “Stronger Now,” on iTunes. It’s also looking for a new recording contract after putting out two albums on the Broken English label.

“We just wanted to put out some new music,” Miller says of the EP. “Some people were upset we only put out a few new songs, but we were sitting around and we wanted to do something. We felt like it was time to get some new songs out, so we decided the best way to do it was just release something ourselves and do it on iTunes.

“We’re writing a lot right now, too, so there’ll definitely be more to come, one way or the other.”

Just Surrender, Patent Pending, Jesse Barrera, Lesley & the Chaos, Pull the Pin, Crashlight and Our Last Go perform at 5 p.m. Friday (Jan. 23) in the Pike Room at the Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Tickets are $10. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
