When Cradle of Filth started working on its eighth studio album, “Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder,” lead guitarist Paul Allender “wrote the songs first, with no concept in mind.”

But he wasn’t too shocked when frontman Dani Filth returned with a conceptually linked batch of songs about the 15th century French murderer Gilles de Rais.

“That’s just typical Dan,” Allender, 38, says with a laugh. “If he came up with a ballerina in pretty pink skirts, then I’d be surprised. But an album about (de Rais)? I don’t think that’s too out of character, for (Filth) or for us as a band.”

Beyond the lyrical concept, in fact, “Godspeed...” brings Cradle of Filth back into a musical character that hearkens to the speed metal attack of the band’s early days, which it moved away from on 2006’s “Thornography.”

“It was purely selfish; I just wanted to play faster,” Allender explains. “I wanted to bring some more extremity back into the band again, more nastiness. I got bored of playing the more (traditional) rock stuff.

“I think at some point every band always seems to venture off on a bit of a tangent, and our extreme tangent was ‘Thornography.’ So for ‘Godspeed...,’ I was like, ‘I’m gonna start writing some really bizarre stuff ’ again and get back to aspect of the band again, which we really like.”

Cradle of Filth, Satyricon and Septic Flesh perform Friday (Jan. 23) at Harpo’s, 14238 Harper, Detroit. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call (313) 779-9278 or visit www.harposconcerttheatre.com.
