After launching a successful vegan restaurant in her native Akron, Ohio, the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde wants to expand — perhaps to one of her neighbors in the north.

“We’d love to get one up in Detroit,” says Hynde, 57, who founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group in 1978 in England and now splits her time between homes in London and Akron. “The point with VegiTerranean was to help rebuild downtown, so it’s very, very important to me that they be in downtown areas.

“I know Detroit also doesn’t have the most vibrant downtown at the moment, so maybe we can be part of something good there. I’d have to come up and have a nose around Detroit to really find that out.”

Meanwhile, despite her aversion to being “very exposed,” Hyde finds herself busy these days with the Pretenders, which released its ninth studio album, “Break Up the Concrete,” in 2008 and is out on the road now to promote it.

“Even to me it sounds like: Why would I want to get on a tour coach and sleep in a bunk with a bunch of guys? But that’s where we feel most comfortable,” says Hynde. “We just do our own thing. We put it together when we feel the time’s right. That’s my trade-off for ... not having to wait tables.”

But Hynde adds that she foresees a day when the Pretenders will not be a going concern anymore.

“Thirty years seems like you’re already wearing out your welcome in rock ‘n’ roll,” she explains, adding that, “It’s not really the sort of thing you can plan. Right now the music’s much more of a vehicle to implement the other things. That’s much more what I’m about than music.”

The Pretenders and American Bang perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Feb. 9) at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $45. Call (734) 668-8463 or visit www.livenation.com.
