Second Band Helps Clutch Stay Prolific

Having one band is enough for most musicians. But Neil Fallon says that his three “prolific” bandmates in Clutch make it necessary for the Bakerton Group, their all-instrumental alter ego, to exist.

“For every one song I write lyrics to, there’s another 10 I never do,” Fallon, 37, explains, “because, one, I just can’t keep up with it and, two, not every song that comes down the pike really lends itself to words.

“So instead of throwing those other (songs) in the recycling bin, we pursue them as instrumentals, which gives a more organic or free feel to things. It’s refreshing, too.”

The Bakerton Group has been in existence since about 1999 but just released its first full-length album, “El Rojo,” this week on the Maryland-based Clutch’s own label, Weathermaker Music. Fallon is pleased the group is taking on more of a life of its own, as an independent entity apart from Clutch, but he acknowledges that fans still have to be educated about the difference between the two.

“I hope people come to a Bakerton Group show expecting to see what Bakerton Group does and not in hopes of hearing one or two Clutch songs,” says the singer-guitarist, adding that Clutch will be recording its next album in March. “It may open up some other doors for us as musicians, playing in different venues or with different bands that would normally shy away from Clutch.

“We just like to play music at the end of the day. If this is a way we can play more music, we’ll do it.”

The Bakerton Group, the Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band and Red Fang perform at 9 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 21) at the Shelter, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 day of show. Call (313) 961-6923 or visit www.livenation.com.
