Dropkick Murphys Go For The Good Time

Al Barr assures us that “the wheel that is Dropkick Murphys keeps spinning” — which is good news for fans of the Irish punk band from Boston.

The group, which is now a seven-piece, has been around for six studio albums, a couple of EPs and six membership changes — and one single, “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” that was featured in the Academy Award-winning film “The Departed” and in “The Simpsons” parody episode “The Debarted.” Through all that, vocalist Barr says Dropkick Murphys have developed a tight definition for “business as usual.”

“We do our show and hope people have a good time,” he explains. “So far people seem to be having a good time with us, so the machine keeps on going.”

The group is planning to record a live album during its annual St. Patrick’s Day run next month in Boston. But plans for a new album to follow 2007’s “The Meanest of Times” are not as well defined.

“It’s too soon,” Barr, 40, says. “We’re always working on things. It’s a work in progress, as any studio record usually is, but there’s not a lot of places to go, really.

“I don’t think the band or the fans want any new direction. They want their Irish and their punk rock. You may see a little more flavor in the choose, if you will, but you’re not gonna get any rave songs or anything like that. That much is for sure.”

Dropkick Murphys, H2O and Civet perform at 7:30 pm. Tuesday (March 3) at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Tickets are $22.50 in advance, $25 day of show. Call (313) 961-5451 or visit www.livenation.com.
