Hollywood Undead "Stoked" By Success

Hollywood Undead titled their debut album “Swan Songs,” but the truth is, it’s anything but.

The album debuted at No. 22 on the Billboard 200 chart in September, after the masked rap-rock sextet from Hollywood’s successful viral campaign netted 41 million song plays and more than 400,000 friends on MySpace — figures so impressive the site administrators even shut down Hollywood Undead’s page to verify the statistics. “Undead,” meanwhile, became a radio hit, so the group is off to a hot start rather than singing any swan songs.

“Oh, dude, I’m stoked,” says vocalist Charlie Scene. “Things are really good. At one point, things weren’t looking good, but we always knew it would eventually come out OK. We’re just happy that it did and with everything that’s going on.”

Hollywood Undead started life as Three Tears when the group members were still in high school. The masks, meanwhile, came along after the group posted its first Internet song, “The Kids.”

“In (‘The Kids’) we were talking about the L.A. scene and people in it, and we didn’t want them to know it was us talking about them,” Scene says. “My first mask was just a Del Taco bag; I had some Del Taco on the way to the studio and I saw the other guys all wearing masks and got extremely jealous, so I just put a Del Taco bag on my head.

“We wear them because they kind of express our music, but we don’t need to have ‘em on all the time.”

Hollywood Undead perform as part of the Saints and Sinners Tour on Sunday (March 15) at Clutch Cargos, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac. Senses Fail, Haste the Day and Brokencyde also perform. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call (248) 333-2362 or visit www.clutchcargos.com.
