Some touring musicians find the road to be disorienting with its constant travel and shifting scenery.

Not Stan Ridgway.

As far as the former Wall of Voodoo frontman is concerned, “the road actually is normal for me.”

“It normalizes my life,” notes Ridgway, 54, who’s using his Desert of Dreams: A Sandstorm of Song tour to preview his next album. “When I’m at home, I just keep going and get into this cycle of ‘I’ve got an idea’ and pursuing it instead of having dinner or going to sleep. It’s probably not a very good lifestyle.

“But on the road, it’s just, ‘Oh boy. We’ve got a show. We better get there. Someone’s waiting.’ I feel a bit stupid saying it, but it’s like having a job. I’d be so mortified if I can’t do it that it’ll force me to pull it all together.”

Ridgway is touring with a trio this year, mixing guitars and keyboards with touches of harmonica and pocket trumpet. “We might even enlist some wayward drummer from the audience, just for the fun of it,” he says. Fans can count on hearing some of the new material, and Ridgway is planning to play “Don’t Box Me In,” his song from the “Rumblefish” soundtrack, as a tribute to actor Mickey Rourke’s Academy Award-nominated comeback.

“We almost got into a fight at a party in Hollywood many years ago that we both attended,” recalls Ridgway, who’s also working on an online-only children’s album, “Silly Songs For Kids, Vol. 1.” “We were really smashed is all I can say. But I was rooting for him, so we’ll have to play my tribute to Mickey Rourke.”

Stan Ridgway & Friends perform Sunday (March 15) at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18. Call (248) 544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
