The four classically trained, pan-global singers in Il Divo have come a long way since being put together in 2004 by Simon Cowell, the famously acerbic judge of “American Idol.”

“We’re friends now,” says David Miller, the group’s American member. But, he acknowledges, that wasn’t the case five albums, three DVDs and three world tours ago.

“At the beginning, we were told, ‘You guys need to become best friends, because that’s how you guys are gonna become a group and not just be four solo singers,” says Miller, 36, a onetime Michigan Opera Theatre performer who’s engaged to Joy Kabanuck of the Three Graces, another classical vocal group. “And we really tried at the beginning ... but in a way that created almost more problems than it solved because we didn’t have a real friendship, you know? We didn’t have any sort of understanding of each other as people.

“All we knew of each other was just sort of in the moment. And trying to forge a friendship on top of a work relationship became kind of forced.”

Miller admits there have been “personality clashes” and “miscommunication” along the way. But ultimately, he says, the simple matter of time has allowed he and his cohorts to forge their relationships in a better way.

“Over the years, we’ve been around the world three times together,” Miller notes. “We’ve done five albums now. Things have settled down. Once we stopped trying to be friends, a natural friendship started growing. Everybody started accepting each other for who they are and stopped trying to meet in the middle.

“It’s a very good situation now. I can see this lasting a good, long time.”

Il Divo performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday (May 17) at the Fox Theatre, 2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $59.50, $89.50 and $129.50. Call (313) 471-6611 or visit www.olympiaentertainment.com.
