After taking “our longest break ever,” New York modern rockers Taking Back Sunday have been back on the road since December. But they’re chomping at the bit for fans to start knowing the songs from the group’s next album, “New Again,” which comes out June 2.

“I’ve heard this sentiment expressed before, how every band feels like they’re about to release ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,’ ” notes bassist Matt Rubano. “I thought that was kind of a cynical thing to express, but after awhile I realized that if you don’t feel that way, you should go back into the studio ’cause your record probably sucks.

“We feel that way. We feel like we’re about to drop our best work onto people, and we’re really proud of it. Any band that’s done their due diligence when coming up with new tunes, that’s the stuff you want to play for people the most. That’s what defines you as an artist at that moment.”

TBS fans are at least able to sample “New Again” via the first single, “Sink Into Me,” a song that Rubano says came along early but was finished late.

“Musically, that came together lightning fast,” the bassist recalls. “(New guitarist Matt) Fazzi played this riff in 6/4 (time signature), then Mark (O’Connell) started playing along a drum beat that was in 4/4, which had a very interesting effect on the overall groove of the song. Literally, in 10 or 15 minutes we had the song done.

“But Adam (Lazzara) labored over the melody and lyrics for a long time. It was one of the last tunes completed even though the music for it was done quite fast. That’s an interesting one.”
