Name: shoe.

Formed: 2003 in Hazel Park Sound: “Motown-infused superpop indie rock.”

Members: Dustin Gardner, vocals and keyboard; Jamiel Dado, bass; Sean Corcoran, drums; with Doug Smith on guitar and synthesizer, live.

Influences: The Beach Boys, Radiohead, gospel music.

Day Jobs: Gardner is a clerk with H@KE Industries in Warren. Corcoran does field work for H@KE and also runs a home painting company, Ninja Painters. Dado is pursuing a business degree online.

What’s in a name? After playing in the local band the Fozzys, Gardner decided to set out on his own as a solo project, “but I still wanted a band name. I wasn’t going to call it the Dustin Gardner Experience or anything like that. I was tired of the “The” names; I wanted just one word. An ex-girlfriend said ‘shoes,’ and I said, ‘No, how about just shoe?’ A few years later, I was listening to an old Beatles interview, and they were talking about the (band) name. John (Lennon) says, ‘We could’ve called ourselves anything. We could’ve called ourselves shoe, for that matter’ ... That was a sign it was the perfect name.”

Hear ’Em: Shoe. has just released its third CD, “Modern Days,” which will be available for free download at the group’s Web site. “Times are hard, so I’m just giving it away for free,” Gardner says. “I want people to fall in love with the band.”
