A new “Demos” collection — a dozen early versions of songs later recorded on albums — will impact the way Crosby, Stills & Nash treat their concerts this summer.

“We’re going to start acoustic, I think,” says Graham Nash, 67, who produced the set as one of a number of archival projects he’s working on for the group. “We’re gonna start very slow and build up. We’re not gonna come out rocking and rolling right away.”

“Demos” features versions of CSN group and solo favorites such as “Marrakesh Express,” “Almost Cut My Hair,” “Déjà Vu,” “Chicago” and “Love the One You’re With,” as well as “Music is Love,” which Nash, David Crosby and Neil Young wrote for Crosby’s 1971 solo set “If I Could Only Remember My Name.” “Demos” is Nash’s second project from the vaults this year, following his own box set retrospective, and he’s also planning two more “Demos” volumes and working on recordings from he and Crosby’s 1993 acoustic tour and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1974 stadium run.

CSN, meanwhile, is working with Grammy Award-winning producer Rick Rubin on a covers album.

“I just realized our music is what we are,” Nash explains. “It’s more important than any of us individually, and I’ve always treated it as ... our legacy. I’ve always known these tapes needed to be stored correctly and kept in the best shape possible. And it’s paid off.”

Crosby, Stills & Nash perform at 8 p.m. Saturday (June 6) at Meadow Brook Music Festival on the campus of Oakland University, Rochester Hills. Tickets are $46 and $76 pavilion, $21 lawn. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
