With his own band to run, another group with his wife, membership in the Allman Brothers Band and a tenure with Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks has been busy, to say the least, during the past few years.

Now, however, he hopes to dial things down a bit.

“I think a lot of it is just maturing as a person,” says Trucks, 29, who released the sixth Derek Trucks Band album, “Already Free,” in January. “I’ve been on the road pretty non-stop since I was maybe 12 or 13 years old. Now that I have kids who are 7 and 4, you feel so much more comfortable being home ... ’cause when you’re away you feel too guilty to relax.

“So being able to drive my kids to school in the morning and write a song an hour later and record it, I’m pretty blessed to be able to do that now.”

Key to Trucks’ new homesteading attitude is a studio he built behind his home with fellow musician Susan Tedeschi in Jacksonville, Fla. That’s where he recorded “Already Free,” but while Truck says the proximity has provided “a new shot of energy,” he was careful to maintain some separation between home and work.

“I did want to make it a point that the studio wasn’t built as an addition to the house,” Trucks explains. “You actually have to walk to work, which I think is good.

“Having a life as a musician, there’s really no separation; I mean, the music we listen to in the house and the music we make out in the studio and the music my kids listen to, it’s all one and the same. But there’s enough of a separation so that everything has its own space, and I think that’s good, too.”

The Derek Trucks Band and Ruthie Foster perform Tuesday (June 9) at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, 318 W. Fourth St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $37.50 and $27.50. Call (248) 399-2980 or visit www.royaloakmusictheatre.com.
