Canadian Rockers Metric Worked Way Into New Album

Canadian modern rock group Metric did not spend four years biding its time between albums.

Besides touring with the band, Metric’s members have been working on their own projects — including singer Emily Haines’ Soft Skeleton — and also road-testing and honing the material that appears on its new album, “Fantasies.”

“It was a prolific time,” reports Haines, 35. “We’re really lucky we do write a lot and don’t get too worried if some of the songs aren’t working out. We stay in the writing and just keep pushing until we get something that feels right to us.”

There was, in fact, another album almost ready prior to “Fantasies,” and Metric had already started to play some of the songs from it on the road. But Haines says that “even though it was well-received, we thought it wasn’t good enough, it wasn’t enough of a step forward. We ended up scrapping all the material and starting over.

“We’re hard on ourselves. I think out of respect for our fans who have been with us since we were playing shows for three people, we don’t want to let them down with a record about writing a record. We want to give them something more than that.”

Haines says those other songs haven’t disappeared, however. “I’d be interested to try them in another time, in another way,” she acknowledges. “I really enjoy that process. I think it’s fascinating when the criteria for what makes a song acceptable is just the four of us feeling good about playing it. That’s what it should always be around, really.”

Metric performs at 7:30 p.m. Monday (June 15) at St. Andrew’s Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 day of show. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
