As he finishes the touring cycle for his first solo album and prepares for the release of his second, Augeste Arthur “A.A.” Bondy has no remorse about leaving the band, Verbena, that gave him his profile in the rock world.

“It’s a lot more satisfying now,” says Bondy, 36, who released “American Hearts” in 2007 and is planning a Sept. 1 bow for its follow-up, “When the Devil’s Loose.” It’s kind of a simple joy being able to move in any direction you want to, whenever you feel called to do it. A band moves slower, I think.”

That said, Bondy adds that he’s also “still racked with the same problems I’ve always had — not really understanding what it is I’m doing and toiling in the dark until something happens. I think you’re always just figuring it out, you know?”

He tries not to let the creative angst get the best of him, though. Bondy is confident “When the Devil’s Loose,” whose sound is somewhat more fleshed-out than the austere “American Hearts,” will further define him as a solo artist, though he says at this point the album is “too fresh” to really have a clear perspective on yet.

“The thing is, if you can arrive at a new place and know what your place is and how to work inside of that — I guess that’s the main thing,” Bondy explains. “It’s hard when you arrive somewhere and don’t know where you are, but interesting things can come out of that, too.”

A.A. Bondy, Holly Miranda and Brien Patrick perform Wednesday (June 17) in the Pike Room at the Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
