Punk Vets X Still Rocking, Raging

It’s been 32 years since X stormed out of the Los Angeles punk rock underground. The quartet is still going strong, and bassist John Doe says that’s no small source of pride amongst he and his four bandmates.

“It has to do with the fact that it’s still four original members, so we’re a little like the last man standing — and then also the fact we don’t suck,” says bassist John Doe (né Duchac), 55. “Blondie doesn’t play. The Talking Heads don’t play. All the Ramones have passed away. The Clash is not around ... That’s not to say we’re as great or as groundbreaking or as influential as they were, but we have our place in that world.

“At some point you drop all the false humility and you’re able to accept the fact it’s OK to say, ‘Yeah, we accomplished something.’ And if we’re playing old songs, that’s OK, as long as you don’t suck. If you play old songs and you suck, then you have to stop.”

X plans to keep making new songs, too. Doe says he and his ex-wife, X singer Exene Cervenka, “actually wrote a couple of songs” recently and predicts that “we might get another X record at some point” — the first since “Hey Zeus!” in 1993.

But where it might wind up in today’s download-happy musical climate, however, is uncertain.

“What’s the point?” notes Doe, who released a country album, “Country Club,” earlier this year with the Canadian group The Sadies. “People don’t really release records in a traditional sense, so if we do it, we’ll probably just put it on the Web site and people can download it. Maybe we’ll get (the songs) into a TV show or something. We’ll have to see.”

X and Steve Soto & the Twisted Hearts perform Wednesday (June 17) at the Majestic Theater, 4140 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
