Los Lobos plans to record its 18th studio album later this year and release it in 2010. The Latino rock veterans just don’t have any new songs yet.
“It’s always like that,” says multiinstrumentalist and producer Steve Berlin. “You’re talking about guys who did their homework on Sunday nights. These guys don’t do anything until there’s a deadline.
“We’re sort of marshalling our energy now, and once we figure out when we need to go in the studio, and once we get those dates fixed, it will become incumbent upon us that work needs to be done and then the writing process will commence. It’ll never happen any other way.”
Los Lobos is playing tour dates throughout the summer, but Berlin says the musicians will “start doing the backwards math” to determine a recording schedule and, therefore, when new material will need to be written. Berlin, meanwhile, recently produced albums by Backyard Tire Fire and a solo outing by Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. He’ll also be working on the Sierra Leonne’s All Stars’ next outing.
Los Lobos and Pistolera perform at 8 p.m. Friday (June 19) as part of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival at the Power Center for the Performing Arts, 121 Fletcher St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $30-45. Call (734) 764-2538 or visit www.annarborsummerfestival.org.
