Motown Move Was Mistake Says Ex-Temptation

Like many of Motown’s stars, former Temptations singer Dennis Edwards has been thinking quite a bit about the company in its 50th anniversary year. He went to Los Angeles with the company in 1972, but these days he views the whole move as a mistake.

“It was a big mistake; we all should have stayed in Detroit,” says Edwards, 66, who these days resides in St. Louis and leads the Temptations Revue. “I know Mr. (Berry) Gordy had aspirations of doing the movie business, and (Los Angeles) was the place to be. But our roots were there in Detroit. There was a camaraderie there. We didn’t get that family atmosphere (in L.A.).

“I think it would have made the city (of Detroit) better, too. We left a little bit of a void there.”

Edwards is doing his part to uphold Motown’s tradition with his group, and he’s added to the legacy with his latest member — Paul Williams Jr., son of the late Temptations member who Edwards credits with mentoring him in the group when he left the Contours to replace David Ruffin in the Tempts in

“He looks just like his father, dances just like him — it’s pretty amazing,” Edwards says. “It’s like Paul cloned him up there in heaven and said, ‘Dennis, take my son and take care of him ... ’

“It’s ironic that his father helped me, and now I can help him and teach him the things his father showed me.”

Legends of Motown with the Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards and the Contours featuring Sylvester Potts takes place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday (June 21) at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are $35.50 pavilion, $10 lawn. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
