The title of Girl in a Coma’s sophomore album, “Trio B.C.,” is a nod to music being the family business.

Trio B.C. was the name of a band led by the late grandfather of Girl in a Coma’s Diaz sisters, Nina and Phanie. “Their grandfather means a lot to them,” says bassist Jenn Alva. “Music runs in the family, so they wanted to pay homage to him. I totally agreed.

“He was a great guy. He would make fun of me, just ’cause he was one of those old fashioned type of people. He used to say, ‘Let your hair grow long, Jenn,’ and I’d have to tell him, ‘No, I’m a lesbian ... ’ He was just a funny old man, but very kind of supportive.”

The San Antonio-based trio — which records for Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records label — also recorded its first song in Spanish to honor the grandfather, which is just one of several new directions the group tried on “Trio B.C.”

“We just want to improve and get better at what we do — it’s as simple as that,” says Alva, who along with Nina Diaz is facing felony assault charges after an altercation with security guards in March at a club in Houston. “We’re always going to be writing and we’re always going to be putting out albums. We just want to make sure we’re going up — up as musicians and people and everything else.”
