The 20th anniversary of Melissa Etheridge’s first album crept up on the singer-songwriter last year — much to her chagrin.

“Can you believe that,” says the Grammy and Academy Award-winning Etheridge, 48, who’s playing solo dates this year after touring in 2008 to promote her most recent album, “The Awakening.” “I think it made me realize you really do stay sort of the same age inside, and this getting older thing is just weird, and time is a weird concept.

“Wow — and I’m not even stoned!”

The Kansas native certainly has plenty to reflect upon when she considers those two decades — 10 albums, hits such as “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One,” the Oscar for “I Need to Wake Up” from the Al Gore documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” surviving breast cancer and an activist role in political, environmental and gay affairs. She also has four children from relationships with filmmaker Julie Cypher and Etheridge’s current spouse, actress Tammy Lynn Michaels.

But don’t expect Etheridge to spend a lot of time peering into her past.

“The crazy thing is, I feel like I have just begun,” she explains. “I know that’s totally cliché, yet I do. I feel like, ‘Wow, that was the first part,’ and I’ve got so much more to do now.

“I’m so much stronger in my writing and my music and what I am as an artist that it’s really just starting to get fun. I say bring on the next 20 years!”

Melissa Etheridge performs at 8 p.m. Friday (June 26) at Sound Board in the MotorCity Casino Hotel, 2901 Grand River Blvd., Detroit. Tickets are $100, $87.50 and $75. Call (866) 782-9633 or visit www.motorcitycasino.com.
