When he takes “the whole deal” on the road, Lyle Lovett’s name is out in front of his Large Band. But rest assured that the Texas singer and songwriter considers the band to be just as great of an attraction.

“The main thing I try to do when I put this group of musicians together is really feature the people on stage,” explains Lovett, 51. We end up doing songs that will highlight either a section of musicians or individual musicians. So that really is what it becomes about, giving everybody a chance to be featured.

“And our flexibility is at its greatest with the Large Band. We can do any kind of material. We have the musical ability to do anything, which is wonderful.”

Lovett, meanwhile, is in the midst of finishing up his next album, the successor to 2008’s “It’s Not Big It’s Large.” The as-yet-untitled set, due out Oct. 20, hearkens back to his 1998 release “Step Inside This House,” mixing originals with songs “by some of my favorite Texas singer-songwriters,” including Townes Van Zandt, Eric Taylor, Vince Bell and Tommy Elskes.

“I had a few new songs of my own

I was really eager to record,” Lovett

explains, “but I just didn’t have enough new songs I liked to do an entire album of my songs, to be honest.

“It’s a good combination, though; these songs all really complement each other, I think. They work well together.”

Lyle Lovett & His Large Band perform at 8 p.m. Friday (July 17) at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester Hills. Tickets are $35 and $45 pavilion, $15 lawn. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
