Ledisi Is "Coming Out" On New Album

When Ledisi’s fifth album, “Turn Me Loose,” comes out on Aug. 18, fans will hear something markedly different — and considerably louder and funkier — than they did on 2007’s Grammy Award-nominated “Lost & Found.”

“I’m coming out,” says the New Orleans-born singer (full name Ledisi Anibade Young). “I wanted to just be myself on this album, really go for it all the way.”

Ledisi acknowledges that when she made “Lost & Found,” she was “unsure who I really was, did I belong in the (music) industry and could I write a song that fit on the radio.” She did that with songs such as “Alright” and “In the Morning,” winning notice from the smooth jazz community as well as the R&B world. But “Turn Me Loose” was inspired by “Them Changes,” a hard-rocking song by the late Jimi Hendrix and Santana collaborator Buddy Miles, which Ledisi covers as a bonus track at the end of the album.

“I really started studying Buddy Miles and the people he studied with, like Wilson Pickett and Jimi Hendrix — they all just did what they wanted to do,” Ledisi says. “I was like, ‘Can I do that and still be me? Will people accept me?’

“And then I stopped thinking about what all the people will think and just did what I wanted to do, whatever I felt. It was ... the best!”

Ledisi and Impromp2 perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 5) at the Chene Park Amphitheatre, 2600 Atwater St. at Chene, Detroit. Tickets are $15 pavilion, $10 lawn. Call (313) 393-7128 or visit www.cheneparkdetroit.com.
