Kim Wilson did not need to have his arm twisted to have his band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, headline Sunday’s benefit for the Offering Alternative Therapy with Smiles (O.A.T.S.) Therapeutic Riding Center in Clarkston.

His mother-in-law runs the program, which uses horses to help both children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.

“It’s a really great thing that she’s doing out there,” says Wilson, 58, who was born in Detroit and now splits his time between homes in Oxford and Orange County, Calif. “She takes these people who are not able to express themselves and puts ’em on these horses, and it kind of empowers them. They come out of their shell. It’s amazing to see.

“She’s been asking me to do (a benefit) for awhile. Every year I’ve got something going on, but this year I said, ‘Look, I’m gonna dedicate this date to this. Don’t book anything for me. This is going to happen.’ So I’m hoping people really come out and contribute to this thing.”

Wilson is, however, at a loss for blues songs that would be appropriate for the event.

“There’s Little Walter’s ‘Don’t Need No Horse,’ ” he notes. “There’s all kinds of horse songs — but, actually, I don’t do any of them! Hopefully our regular set will be good enough.”

The Fabulous Thunderbirds perform Sunday (Aug. 16) at The Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20, with proceeds going to the O.A.T.S. Therapeutic Riding Center. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
