California headbangers DevilDriver showed up at this year’s Download Festival in the U.K. with the intention of setting a Guinness World Record for the largest circle mosh pit ever. The group failed, but frontman Dez Fafara has an explanation.

“In 2007, we jokingly remarked we were going to make the biggest circle pit ever,” says Fafara, 43, who started DevilDriver in 2002 after the demise of his previous band, Coal Chamber. “We were in one of the tents, so it turned out to be 15,000 or 20,000 people — huge. The Guinness book people got word of this and wrote us.

“So they showed up this year and we were on the main stage. Now, there were 80,000 people there, but the way they have the place set up, with barricades and everything ... we had four massive pits but there was no way we could turn it all into one big pit.

“So we didn’t set the world record but, let’s face it, being on the main stage, there’s no comparison.”

DevilDriver is out this year promoting its fourth album, “Pray For Villains.” The group also is pondering other projects, including making use of a concert it filmed last year in Detroit.

“We’ve been filming since the beginning of pre-production for our first record, so almost since 2001,” Fafara says. “Now there’s actually some talk about making some kind of movie out of it, but there’s a lot of questions: Is it gonna be a movie? Do we have a distributor? Are we gonna shop it around?

“Fortunately, I’m in a position where I can just stand by and watch the people who do the business figure it out.”
