Peter Frampton had a hit with Motown in 1977, when his cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed Delivered (I’m Yours)” hit the Top 20.

But for his upcoming album, the British-born rock icon wanted to get even closer to the source, enlisting members of Motown’s famed house band The Funk Brothers

to play on the track “Invisible Man.”

“That was quite an amazing day,” recalls Frampton, 59, who resides in Cincinnati these days — though he’s been spending more time in Los Angeles with his 13-year-old daughter Mia acting in ABC Family channel’s “Make It or Break It.”

“It was a very reverent day, both ways. I was excited to have them on one of my records, of course. And they were so excited to be back in the studio, and (the song) was something new and written for them. No one’s written a song for them before. It’s all about the invisible man, or men, behind all those amazing records. It’s a pretty cool story.”

Frampton hopes to have the as-yetuntitled project out in the early spring of 2010, following up 2006’s “Fingerprints,” which snagged his first-ever Grammy Award, for Best Pop Instrumental Album. There will be vocals on this set, Frampton reports, including a collaboration with is 21-year-old son Julian.

“He’s a much better lyricist than I am,” says Frampton, who’s been playing some of the new songs in concert. “He has made me look at the guitar in a different way, which is pretty amazing, just in the way he puts things together.

“I hear bits of me in there. He’s obviously influenced by me and has it in him, but there’s other things — like, his chord sequences just floor me. I know I’m gushing, but on the other hand I’m a very strong critic, and we wouldn’t be talking about Julian if I didn’t think he was good. It has definitely surprised me how good he is.”

Peter Frampton and Very Emergency perform at 8 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 22) at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the campus of Oakland University, Rochester Hills. Tickets are $55 and $45 pavilion, $15 lawn with a $44 lawn four-pack. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
