Panic! At the Disco split in half earlier this summer, with frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith keeping the band name and guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker leaving to start a new group called the Young Veins.

It’s dramatic, but Urie says there was more sweet than sorrow to the parting.

“Luckily it didn’t end badly,” says Urie, 22. “We all understand we wanted to do different things and were just pulling each other’s strings in different directions. “I think we were very fortunate that we’re all still very good friends and we were able to come to this amicable agreement.

"In the long run, I think it’s going to be a lot better. Maybe our two new groups can collide and do something together at some point.”

Urie and Smith are keeping Panic! visible. They’ve brought in three other musicians to honor commitments opening for blink-182 this summer, and Panic! has a new song, “New Perspective,” as the single for the soundtrack to the film “Jennifer’s Body.” The two plan to hit the recording studio next month — with blink bassist Mark Hoppus producing at least one track — and bring out Panic!’s third album hopefully in the first half of 2010.

“There’s always a bit of nerves that come with expectations and new situations,” Urie says. “But, really, Spencer and I are just trying to get back to where we used to be, and we’re looking forward to doing more tours and writing new songs and meeting new people and having all these new experiences.

“The future should be exciting, you know? It shouldn’t be a nerve-wracking experience.”

blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco and Chester French perform at 6 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 22) at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are sold out. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
