Stanley Dural Jr. is celebrating his 30th anniversary as Buckwheat Zydeco, the solo artist alter ego he adopted after leading his own R&B band, Buckwheat & the Hitchhikers, and then spending a couple years playing organ in Zydeco legend Clifton Chenier’s Red Hot Louisiana Band.

“It doesn’t feel like 30 years,” says Dural, 61, who covers songs by Bruce Springsteen, Captain Beefheart, Gov’t Mule and Memphis Minnie’s Led Zeppelin-popularized “When the Levee Breaks” on his new album, “Lay Your Burden Down.” “I know I’ve been doing this for awhile, but when they say it’s your 30-year anniversary and I’m still doing what I’m doing, that’s rewarding. That’s a blessing.”

It’s also ironic. Dural grew up listening to his father play accordion “all day long” and decided early on the instrument was not for him. But working with Chenier changed his mind, and it also made Dural appreciate his father’s music in a new light.

“Me and my dad didn’t ever get along with my music,” Dural notes. “But after I started playing (accordion), we became best friends. He was my first customer the first time I got on stage with (the accordion); I thought he had opened the place, man! And once we started playing, it was nothing but smiles.

“So that was a blessing, too. I just want to keep doing this as long as I can, ’cause I love it.”

Buckwheat Zydeco and Josh Charles perform Tuesday (Aug. 25) at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 day of show. Call (248) 544-1991 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
