St. Louis rockers Cavo have topped the charts -- with a song the quartet almost didn't get a chance to record.

Frontman Casey Walker was driving around one day when he came up with the chorus for "Champagne," which recently hit No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart as the first single from Cavo's major label debut album, "Bright Nights, Dark Days."

"I didn't really think anything of it," recalls Walker. "I took it to practice and was going through my phone and came across it. I said, 'You guys've got to hear this. I'm gonna erase it, but you've got to hear it first.

"So I let them hear it and was about to erase it and noticed Chris (Hobbs, Cavo's guitarist) had already started playing chords that sounded like what I was singing. Within 10 minutes the song was written and done. It just fell out of us."

The success coincides with Cavo's run on this year's Crue Fest 2 tour and an upcoming tour with Shinedown. A second single, "Crash," is already planned, and a big homecoming show is on tap for Thanksgiving weekend.

"Every day we just get better and better news," Walker says. "We really worked hard the last five or six years, not really worrying about touring and playing show after show but trying to write great songs. I think it paid off for us."

Cavo performs with Red and Pop Evil at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 1) at the Michigan State Fair, Woodward Avenue at Eight Mile Road, Detroit. The show is included with State Fair admission. Call (313) 369-8250 or visit www.michiganstatefair.com.
