ZZ Top Swings Back Into Action After Canceled Aerosmith Tour

ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons notes that, given the various maladies suffered by members of Aerosmith throughout their truncated summer tour together, “it was an outing that seemed to have been fraught with stones in the pathway” — even before the whole thing was called off after Steven Tyler’s fall from the stage last month in South Dakota.

“The good news,” Gibbons says, “is that, given time, they’ll be back in action, not sooner than later but sooner than never.”

For ZZ Top, meanwhile, it was right away.

Gibbons says the Texas trio started receiving offers to play its own headlining dates “within 72 hours” of Aerosmith pulling the plug, and he says ZZ Top’s itinerary — which is booked into late October with dates in North America, Singapore, the Netherlands and the U.K. — is designed “to at least attempt to return to the previously booked markets and add a few along the way so we can make a well-rounded outing of this thing.”

ZZ Top will be busy after that, too. On Oct. 20 the group is releasing “Double Down Live,” a DVD culled from performances in 1980 and 2008. And once it comes off the road, Gibbons says the band plans to return to the studio with Grammy Award-winning producer Rick Rubin and possibly the Black Keys to continue working on the follow-up to 2003’s “Mescalero.”

“The first crack out of the box will start off with something somewhat predictable, maybe taking a blues direction, and then we’ll see,” Gibbons notes. “Rick Rubin is a guy with a lot of good, original ideas, so I’m sure he’ll have a fresh vision for things to do with ZZ Top, and we can’t wait.”

ZZ Top performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 5) at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $35 and $45 with a $105 balcony four-pack. Call (313) 961-5451 or visit www.livenation.com.
