Pepper Keenan and the other members of the heavy rock supergroup Down have entertained the idea of touring with Seattle grungemeisters The Melvins for many years. And now that it’s happening, the guitarist says it’s as good as he imagined it would be.

“They don’t tour too much or open up for too many people, so it was kind of an honor for us to even get this thing working,” notes Keenan, 42, the onetime Corrosion of Conformity frontman who co-founded Down in 1991 with members of Pantera, Crowbar and Eyehategod. “It seemed like an interesting idea to get the heavy metal thing we do and ... whatever crowd they have.

“And it works, man. They’re on fire. They jam with us at the end of our set, on a song called ‘Bury Me in Smoke.’ It’s crazy ... a blast.”

Down, meanwhile, plans to release a DVD called “Diary of a Mad Band” this fall, and then go into the studio at the beginning of the new year to start working on the group’s fourth album, the follow-up to 2007’s “Down III: Over the Under.”

“We’ve been playing live so much, we’ve got this mental idea of what to do,” he says. “I think we just want to do a go-forthe-throat kind of Ramones or AC/DCstyle thing, more like our first record, not so many elegant songs. We want to strip it down.

“So if we don’t beat ourselves up trying to write 8,000 parts to every song and do a bunch of overdubs, we should be good. I would hope we’d have something out within the year.”

Down, the Melvins, Weed Eater and Evil Army perform Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Emerald Theatre, 31 N. Walnut St., Mt. Clemens. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 day of show. Call (586) 913-1920 or visit www.emeraldtheater.com.
