The title of Dear and the Headlights’ second album, “Drunk Like Bible Times,” would seem to imply ... something. But frontman Ian Metzger says it’s more about humor than social commentary.

“It was just something I came up with off the top of my head,” says Metzger, 28, who co-founded the Arizona indie rock outfit around 2002 in Phoenix. “You just say it and it kind of makes you laugh and you’re not sure what the hell it means. It’s just a vague, silly statement that struck me as pretty funny.

“I pitched it and everybody thought it was pretty interesting, and we decided to go with it. We’re still not sure what it means.”

Metzger says he and the band still feel “very strongly” that “Drunk” shows a degree of growth and musical maturity from the group’s 2007 debut, “Small Steps, Heavy Hooves.” But with about a dozen ideas in hand, he expects the group to change course again on its third album.

“I don’t really see it sounding like anything we’ve done so far,” Metzger notes. “That just kind of seems to be the theme; both of the records so far don’t really remind me of each other, and the new songs don’t remind me too much of either record.

“It think it’s just a continuing process. There’s another kind of maturity that’s taking place with these new ideas, parts that are very simple but still very viable. We’re not going to scrap them just because they’re simple, so we’ll see where it leads.”

Dear and the Headlights and Kinch perform Saturday (Sept. 19) at the iLounge in Clutch Cargo’s, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show. Call (248) 333-2362 or visit www.clutchcargos.com.
