Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley will be in town this weekend to promote “Anomaly,” his first set of new material in 20 years. But he’s also coming to pay hom- age to Cobo Arena, where Kiss recorded its breakthrough “Alive!” album, before it goes under the wrecking ball.

“I’ve always had great, fond memories of that place,” says Frehley, 58, who’s served two tenures with Kiss, leaving most recently in 2001. “We were headlining at Cobo when around the rest of the country we were headlining theaters.

“A lot of people used to think we were from Detroit. It was always a special town to us. It’s such a rock ’n’ roll town. It’ll always have a special place in the hearts of Kiss and its fans.”

Frehley, meanwhile, is hoping those fans will have a place for “Anomaly” in their collections. Released on Tuesday — the third anniversary of his sobriety — he likens it to 1978’s “Ace Frehley,” his first solo album, which was recorded and released during Kiss’ commercial zenith.

“Prior to going into the studio, I listened to that first album, which everybody cites as their favorite Ace record,” says Frehley, who covered the Sweet hit “Fox on the Run” on “Anomaly.” “I dissected it and tried to get into the same mind-set this time around. I think I recaptured some of the musical textures and attitude and vibe that I had on that first record.

“I went away for awhile. I went to outer space ... and came back. Now I’m stronger than ever, with a vengeance. I just hope everyone likes (‘Anomaly’). I really put my heart and soul into it.”

Ace Frehley will sign autographs at 8 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Hard Rock Cafe — Detroit, 45 Monroe St. He’ll sign one item per fan, and copies of his new album, “Anomaly,” will be sold onsite. Call (313) 964-7625 or visit www.hardrock.com.
