Though he’d resisted some Sunny Day Real Estate reunion overtures before, bassist Nate Mendel — who’s been in Foo Fighters since 1995 — says he pushed for the group’s current reformation.

“I bugged everybody until they agreed to do it, and that’s basically how it happened,” says Mendel, 40, who co-founded the punk-flavored rock band in 1992 in Seattle. “I’ve always loved those two Sunny Day records that I played on. I was always really proud of them, and I like the other musicians in the band. I like playing with them. I think they’re very talented and fun and interesting guys.

“So I wanted to just get together and relive the whole experience.”

To accompany the reunion, those two albums — 1994’s “Diary” and 1995’s “Sunny Day Real Estate” (aka “LP2”) — have been re-released in expanded editions. Mendel says he and the other band members — singer-guitarists Jeremy Enigk and Dan Hoerner and drummer William Goldsmith — enjoyed preparing for the tour, but he says the quartet is “on egg shells” about whether the reunion will lead to new music from the volatile group.

“Any old wounds from the past, no one wants to bring them up,” he explains. “We just want to focus on positive things, and you start writing new songs and that opens up a whole new can of worms. And those of us that are still playing in bands are pretty busy, too.

“One thing I didn’t know before we start this and I know now is we could make another record. We get along. We still have a connection that would allow us to make music. So if the will and time is there, it’s a possibility, at least.”

Sunny Day Real Estate and the Jealous Sound perform Friday (Sept. 25) at St. Andrew’s Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are sold out. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
