Name: Johnny Headband

Formed: 2003 in Farmington Hills

Sound: Electronic-flavored rock.

Members: Chad Thompson — vocals, electronics; Keith Thompson — vocals, bass; Panic — bass; Rob “RGS” Saunders — drums.

Influences: Keith Thompson, who also plays in the Electric Six and maintains several other musical projects, says he and brother Chad, who grew up near Flint and started Johnny Headband together after both attended Michigan State University, don’t share many musical favorites save for the electronic duo Air and other French acts. “I listen to a lot of heavy music and discoey music and electronic music. (Chad) listens to a lot more Flaming Lips then me. We both like all kinds of music, though.”

What’s In a Name? Keith says the Johnny Headband name was the result of brainstorming but doesn’t necessarily have a deep meaning. “We knew we didn’t want something you could put ‘the’ in front of,” he says. “It was very clear when Chad came up with the name that that’s what it needs to be. It was just very obvious to us. I’d say that (name) defines our way of seeing the world on the context of a band.”

Show And Tell: Besides the music, Johnny Headband puts a great deal of focus and emphasis on band’s visual elements, including its live show and videos. “The live show is as much calisthenics as it is music, and the videos are about music but also are about characters and things like that,” says Keith, who worked in the corporate video production world while Chad is also a film director. “It’s beyond just a band standing there playing their instruments trying to look cool. We don’t want to be that band. We want something with more of a sense of character.
