Dinosaur Jr. drummer Emmett “Murph” Murphy III says he “didn’t really have any expectations” for his reunion with original bandmembers J. Mascis and Lou Barlow in 2005. But, he adds that the fresh incarnation of the band “is definitely better than I would have expected it to be.”

“It’s night and day, 100 percent better now than it was before,” says Murph, 44, who left Dinosaur Jr. in 1993 to join The Lemonheads. “Everything is better. We travel better. We communicate better. As people, we just aren’t as uptight about stuff anymore.

“So across the board, everything’s better.”

Dinosaur Jr.’s reunion has produced a pair of studio albums, 2007’s “Beyond” and this year’s “Farm,” which was recorded at guitarist Mascis’ home studio in upstate New York and was, according to Murph, an entirely different experience than its predecessor.

“ ‘Beyond’ was like a reunion record, where ‘Farm’ definitely feels like a band record,” he explains. “And how we made the record was totally different. On ‘Beyond’ we took about seven months, touring in between and doing it in bits and pieces. ‘Farm’ was done more traditionally. We had two or three months where everything had to be done and we were under the wire, under the gun, had to produce and market his piece of work.

“It was a little more stressful, but in the end I think it’s a better record.”

Dinosaur Jr. and Lou Barlow & the Missing Men perform Sunday (Oct. 11) at The Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot. com.
