Tim Butler says the Psychedelic Furs are "reinvigorated."

Why? There's any number of reasons. The long-lived group, which bassist Butler and his brother, frontman Richard, formed during the British punk revolution of 1977, has some new members this year. It's also playing a selection of songs "that we either haven't played ever or haven't played for a long time," according to Tim Butler.

And then there's the audience that's turning out to hear favorites such as "Pretty in Pink," "Love My Way," "The Ghost in You" and "Heaven."

"It's kids in their late teens and early 20s," notes Butler, 50. "I don't know how they've suddenly been turned on to the Furs, but they're out there in the audience, right next to those really hard-core, loyal fans who know everything about the band. The two of them together is great.

"We never anticipated this. When you first do something you're just excited about putting something out and getting a small audience. Thirty years later, to still be getting audiences, is amazing. It shows we still have something to offer."

Butler is hoping the Furs, who split up in 1991 and reunited in 2000, will have some new music to offer those fans in the near future. He says the group has been writing for its first new studio album since 2001's "World Outside" but has not yet hit the studio, and he promises the band won't be hurrying in until its ready.

"We have lots of basic sort of tracks written in demo form, and we're just waiting for the icing of Richard's lyrics," Butler says. "We're working on it at our own pace. We're not gonna come out with an album that's gonna compete with U2 or the Killers, but we still have stuff to say, and we want to take our time and get it right 'cause it's been a few years since we've had one out.

"We just want to make sure it's worthy of our legacy, if you will."

Psychedelic Furs, Happy Mondays and Islands perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 13) at Clutch Cargos, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac. Tickets are $25. Call (248) 333-2362 or visit www.clutchcargos.com.
