The Used Keeps Its Rock "Gross"

The members of The Used describe the sound of their newly released fourth album, “Artwork,” as “gross pop.”

Not exactly flattering, is it?

“People are kind of curious about that term, saying it’s a new genre or something like that,” explains guitarist Quinn Allman, who co-founded the Orem, Utah, quartet in the late ’90s. “It’s just a descriptive term, really. It’s like a lot of albums that we love, like ‘In Utero’ by Nirvana, ‘Pinkerton’ by Weezer, the Pixies, music where it sounds thrown-away but there’s still a driving melody to hold it all together.

“From the beginning, we’ve been making a gross pop kind of sound. This time we just made it a little bit noisier, a little more raw, but it’s still a big, anthemic, rock record. That’s what we wanted to make this time out.”

“Artwork” — which debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in September — follows a difficult time in The Used’s career after the band split from its management company and, Allman acknowledges, “were kind of worried, like, ‘Are we gonna still be able to do this?’ ” Fortunately, it didn’t have to wait long for an answer.

“Our label gave us a vote of confidence,” says Allman, 27, “and we did the whole album on our own. Instead of sitting too long on our hands, we went into a house and busted out 30 songs ...

“We were really anxious, but it was a decision we couldn’t live without making, so we knew it was for the better. Fortunately, it all worked out and we really are in a better situation now.”

The Used, the Almost and Drive A perform at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 17) at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Tickets are $27 with an $82 balcony four-pack. Call (313) 961-5451 or visit www.livenation.com.
