Lucero Enters Major Label World On Its Own Terms

Soulful Memphis rockers Lucero waited eight albums before signing into the major label world, hooking up with Universal Republic for its new “1372 Overton Park.” But frontman Ben Nichols says the deal hasn’t changed the group’s day-to-day operations in the least.

“We have been a small band but established. We’ve done a lot of our own legwork over the last 10 years,” notes Nichols, 35. “The deal we signed with them allows us a large amount of independence and control, still. We probably wouldn’t have done any other deal, really.

“The reason we did it was, hopefully there’ll be a couple doors opened that wouldn’t be open otherwise — maybe late-night TV shows, a little more radio or satellite radio airplay, maybe a publishing department that can help get a few songs into movies or TV shows. That’s the main reason. They don’t really horn in on our touring or anything like that.”

But Nichols concedes that the new situation did apply a little bit of extra pressure that he actually found useful in making the new album.

“They kept wanting to hear demos of the songs,” Nichols recalls. “We wanted to just get into the studio and see what happens, but they insisted on demos, and then there were deadlines and all that stuff.

“So I remember one night right before a deadline, three or four songs came together. I don’t know if that’s just because we had a deadline to meet, but it certainly lit a fire ... that helped us get things done. I can’t deny that.”

Lucero, Amy LaVere and Cedric Burnside & Lightin’ Malcolm perform Wednesday (Oct. 21) at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $14 in advance, $16 day of show. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
