Washington, D.C.’s, Thievery Corporation is no small concern.

The group — formed in 1995 and led by DJs Rob Garza and Eric Hilton — carries a pan-global troupe of 13 vocalists and musicians, hailing from Argentina, Brazil, Zambia, Jamaica and elsewhere. It’s what’s necessary to recreate the multi-cultural blend of last year’s “Radio Retaliation” — whose packaging was nominated for a Grammy Award — and Thievery Corporation’s other six albums, but Garza acknowledges that the mass of bodies “is almost like a circus.”

“But at the same time,” he adds, “it’s all centered around the music. That’s what we do — make, produce and record and create these songs. It starts with the music first, and just over the years, we’ve managed to meet and pull into our group a few people along the way.

“It’s a real pleasure for us to be working with such a great group. It’s a lot of fun as well.”

Among Thievery Corporation’s fans is Paul McCartney, who had the troupe open for his Aug. 1 show in Landover, Md.

“That was pretty insane,” Garza, 39, recalls with a laugh. “To meet Paul McCartney was pretty wild; the people around him were like, ‘Oh, he likes your music,’ he wanted us to show up the day before so we could meet him, and we were pretty surprised by that.

“It was just, like, ‘Hello ... ’ I mean, you feel very star struck in a way, like, what do you say to one of The Beatles? ‘Hey, nice day?’ We just kind of shot the breeze, but that was still ... surreal.”

Thievery Corporation performs Wednesday (Oct. 21) at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, 318 W. Fourth St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40. Call (248) 399-2980 or visit www.royaloakmusictheatre.com.
