The 69 Eyes Find A Place For Vampires In Rock

The 69 Eyes, self-styled “vampire” rockers from Finland, are on their first full-scale tour of North America, supporting their 10th album, “Back in Blood.” And the timing is hardly coincidental according to frontman Jyrki 69.

“We were trying to be in America for the first time in my life during Halloween,” explains Jyrki (real name Jyrki Pekka Emil Linnankivi), 40, who co-founded The 69 Eyes in 1989 in Helsinki with a lineup that’s stayed intact since its inception.

“We don’t celebrate Halloween in Finland at all, so thinking of a band whose main idea is all about Halloween and vampires, it’s very interesting to be here at this moment. We’re enjoying it already.”

It’s also a good time to be a band immersed in gothic and vampire imagery, from the popularity of the “Twilight” series on down. But while he dresses the part, don’t expect to find Jyrki in the audience for horror and macabre films.

“I don’t like to get scared,” he explains. “If I go to see a horror movie, I try to avoid seeing anything nasty or really gory. I like the softer, ’80s kind of horror films — and vampire movies that aren’t really scary.

“But I’m not really into ‘Saw’ or stuff like that too much. I’m much more of a science fiction fan. I’m starting to think it’s time to get (the music) inspired by science fiction, for a change.”

The 69 Eyes, Dommin and the Becoming perform Friday (Oct. 23) at the I-Rock Nightclub, 16350 Harper, Detroit. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call (313) 779-9278 or visit www.harposconcerttheatre.com.
