After self-producing 2007’s “Lust Lust Lust” themselves, Sweden’s Raveonettes decided that they “wanted to work with someone else” on their fourth album, “In and Out of Control,” according to the group’s Sharin Foo.

But while Foo and partner Sune Rose Wagner had a desire “to maybe deconstruct The Raveonettes a little bit and be challenged a little bit within our comfort zone,” she acknowledges that adjusting to co-producer Thomas Troelsen was easier said than done.

“I think the first two, three weeks were quite frustrating and difficult for us to find common ground,” acknowledges Foo. “I think Sune and I didn’t really have our focus yet; we were still trying to figure out what direction we wanted to go in.

“But I think good things come of that, when everybody’s frustrated and you’re trying to work things out. You’re forced to figure out what you want, and ... we eventually found the right dynamic and were able to move forward.”

Foo does credit Troelsen with helping the Raveonettes both loosen up and lighten its sound a bit, coming up with riffy anthems such as “Bang!” and “D.R.U.G.S.” to mitigate more sober material like “Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)” and “Suicide.”

“I think Thomas was really great at getting us to gravitate towards some of the more lighter and celebratory material,” Foo notes. “Whereas Sune and I gravitate towards darker stuff, we’re glad he pushed us to go toward the more extroverted part of The Raveonettes. It’s good for us — and for the listeners, probably.”

The Raveonettes, the Black Angels and the Hounds Below perform Friday (Oct. 23) at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
